Between protection and surveillance: Current developments in German surveillance politics

Preventive and systematic surveillance of electronic communications of individuals and companies has grown continuously during the last years through new legal measures and obligations. This can be seen, for example, in the planned regulations of different German laws, as the Telecommunications Act, the IT Security Act, the BND Act or the domestic intelligence act. In this context, the use of government malware, so-called “State Trojans” and “state hacking” are being discussed as permissible measures at home and abroad.

On 25 March 2021 Dr. Thorsten Wetzling and other experts discussed these questions in an online webinar how new regulations and measures not only pose new challenges for the companies and providers subject to the obligation, but also affect citizens in their everyday digital lives and society as a whole. The webinar was organized by eco- Association of the internet industry.
